    2014-11-18 03:11| Font Size A A A

What Organs Does Polycystic Disease AffectPolycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder that is characterized by a cluster of cysts on the kidneys. These cysts will attack many organs.

    Kidney

This is the first organ that is affected by numerous cysts. The cysts enlarge and start to compress the kidneys, leading to ischemia and anoxia in the kidneys. The kidneys have the function of regulating blood pressure, discharging excessive substances and fluids, forming urine, secreting vitamin D and help generating blood cells.

When the blood flow to kidneys reduces due to compression from cysts, the kidneys cannot function well. As a result, Polycystic Kidney Disease patients will experience back pain, high blood pressure, protein or blood in urine, swelling, anemia, dizziness, bone pain, and so on.

    Liver

It is not rare to find cysts on the liver for Polycystic Kidney Disease. It is also called “Polycystic Liver Disease (PLD)”. People who are at older age are more likely to see this when they take an ultrasound or CT scan test.

    Brain

Brain Aneurysm is also a complication of Polycystic Kidney Disease. When the cyst on the brain is not big, it cause no symptoms. When the cyst enlarges, it is likely to cause headache or dizziness. It also has a risk of rupture, which is very dangerous. Therefore, Polycystic Kidney Disease patients should take a routine test to monitor the growth of cyst.

    Digestive tract

In the advanced stages, the kidneys are severely damaged, leading to accumulation of wastes and toxins. These harmful substance will deposit in the digestive tract, resulting in nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

To sum up, kidney disease is related to almost all the systems, since the blood flow passing trough kidneys will also be carried to other organs.
