    Hemolytic Uremia Syndrome in Children

    2014-08-29 07:59| Font Size A A A

Hemolytic Uremia Syndrome in ChildrenHemolytic Uremia Syndrome (HUS) is a kind of syndrome about unclear acute intravascular hemolytic anemia associated with kidney failure. It is primarily a disease of infancy and early childhood and is classically characterized by the triad of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure.

It develops when Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria lodged in the digestive tract make toxins that enter the bloodstream and start to destroy red blood cells.

How do you know that your child have HUS?

With HUS, the child remains pale, tired, and irritable.

Other signs include small, unexplained bruises or bleeding from the nose or mouth that may occur because the toxins also destroy the platelets, cells that normally help the blood to clot.

Infection of the digestive tract is called gastroenteritis and may cause a child to vomit and have stomach cramps and bloody diarrhea.

More than half of children with HUS develop acute kidney failure. With kidney failure, the child's urine output decreases. The urine may also appear red. Urine formation slows because the damaged red blood cells clog the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys, making them work harder to remove wastes and extra fluid from the blood. The body's inability to rid itself of excess fluid and wastes may in turn cause high blood pressure or swelling of the face, hands, feet, or entire body.

How to treat HUS for children?

The treatment should be taken firstly which consist of maintaining normal salt and water levels in the body, are aimed at easing the immediate symptoms and preventing further problems.

Some children may sustain significant kidney damage that slowly develops into permanent kidney failure and will then require long-term dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy is also a available therapy to treat this kidney disease. It makes full use of Chinese medical herbs and western drugs as well as advanced technology to improve the kidney lesions. In addition, it is an external application of Chinese medicine and to large extent, it can help patients avoid the dialysis or kidney transplant if used successfully.
