Kidney Transplant is a procedure that means a healthy kidney from one person is placed into another whose kidneys have stopped working. After surgery, patients worried that the new kidney fails again, how often is the second kidney transplant needed?
To know the answer, we should know the survival rate of the transplanted kidney.
Generally speaking, renal survival means that kidney has function. Different patients have different different consequences due to different illness conditions. These numbers are just reference. And they just means the renal survival rate, not the patient.
One-Year survival-survival is excellent the fist year following transplant surgery, with 96 percent of recipients of decreased-donor kidneys and 99 percent of recipients of living donor kidneys still living.
Five-Year survival-at the end of year of five, 85% of deceased-donor and 93 percent of living-donor recipients remain alive. However, 16 percent have been hospitalized during the first two years for urinary tract infections or pneumonia, and 10 percent for a cardiovascular event. Forty percent have developed new onset diabetes.
Ten-Year Survival – Despite the potential health scares mentioned above, 62 percent of deceased-donor and 78 percent of living-donor recipients are still alive with functioning grafts at 10 years.
Well then, how often is the second kidney transplant needed?
Actually, the answer is different from person to person. Some patients have a successful transplantation, while some patients’ new kidney will fail to work normally, especially when patients suffer from rejection reaction. If the transplant fails, patients return to dialysis as before. The transplant will be removed only if it is causing symptoms, such as fever or pain. This is often necessary if the kidney fails soon after transplant, but rarely if it fails after several months. You may be able to have another transplant later, if you desire.
