What Causes GFR Level To Be Low

    2014-06-03 02:20| Font Size A A A

What Causes GFR Level To Be LowGFR is an important standard to learn about our kidney function, and low GFR means patient’s kidney function is damaged. As a matter of fact, the lower patient’s GFR is, the more kidney function is daamged. Well then, what on earth causes GFR level to be low?

What is the normal GFR level?

GFR refers to glomerular filtration rate, which means how much blood has been filtrated by kidney in unit time. There is about 660ml blood will flow through kidney in every minute, which will become primary urine, and after the reabsorption of kidney tubule, terminal urine will be produced. In fact, for healthy people, their GFR level can reach 120ml/min.

Why CKD patients have low GFR?

CKD is a progressive disease, which can damage patient’s kidney function gradually, and patient’s GFR will be reduced gradually in this process.

There are about one million nephrons in kidney, which is in charge of filtering the blood in our body. While kidney disease will damage patient’s kidney structure, and more and more nephrons will be damaged in this process, which will cause patient’s GFR to be lower and lower.

What can casue GFR level to be low?

However, that does not mean people have kidney damage if their GFR level is lower than the highest level, because many factors can affect patint’s GFR, and if patient’s GFR is higher than 90ml/min, that is thought to be normal.

In fact, there are three major factors can affect patient’s GFR, and they are effective filtration pressure, effective renal plasma flow and glomerular structure changes. Kidney disease will damage nephrons, which will cause glomerular structure changes, and that is why CKD patients have low GFR. Besides, if patients have high blood pressure or patient’s renal blood flow reduces due to factors like dehydration, that will also cause patients to have low GFR.

Thereby, it does not mean patients have kidney disease if their GFR is lower than normal, but chronic kidney disease will surely cause patients to have low GFR. Kidney disease is very dangerous, and patients should deal with their condition actively.
