    What Does GFR Mean

    2014-04-19 01:45| Font Size A A A

What Does GFR Mean For patients with kidney disease, GFR is an important standard to assess their kidney function. While patients with kidney disease may have this curiosity: what does GFR mean?

    What is GFR?

When blood flows through kidney, a part of it will be filtered by glomeruli, which will produce primary urine in this process. After the primary urine is absorbed by kidney tubule, terminal urine will be produced eventually.

As a matter of fact, GFR refers to glomerular filtration rate, which means how much blood has been filtered by kidney in unit time.

What is the connection between GFR and kidney function?

For healthy people, their GFR is about 120ml/min, which means there is about 120ml blood will be filtered by kidney per minute.

For patients with kidney disease, their disease will damage their kidney function, which will cause patient’s kidney function to go down gradually. As a result, patient’s GFR will be reduced in this process.

There are about one million nephrons in kidney, which has the function of producing urine. When patient’s kidney disease cause damage to nephrons, that will reduce patient’s kidney function. As a result, patient’s GFR will also reduce gradually.

What GFR level is a dangerous sign?

As we know, GFR is a reflection of patient’s kidney function, and the lower GFR is, the less normal kidney function patient has.

Our kidney has strong metabolic ability, and half normal kidney function will be able to guarantee our body health. As we have said, healthy people’s GFR can reach 120ml/min. That means if patient’s GFR is above 60ml/min, patient’s kidney function will be able to guarantee their body health. Thereby, patients do not need worry too much if their GFR is above 60ml/min.

Chronic kidney disease is divided into five stages according to patient’s GFR. In fact, because many factor can affect our GFR, if patient’s GFR is above 90ml.min, it is thought to be normal. But chronic kidney disease is a progressive disease, and patient’s kidney function will be damaged gradually, and it just needs a long time to make patients have severe kidney damage.

Thereby, if patients have chronic kidney disease, that is very dangerous, but patients will not have any problem if their GFR is above 60. Patients should do what they can to protect their kidney function and improve overall health condition as early as possible.
