What Are The Normal Creatinine And BUN Levels

    2014-04-14 08:15| Font Size A A A

What Are The Normal Creatinine And BUN LevelsFor patients with kidney disease, creatinine and BUN are two important standards to assess patient’s renal condition. Patient’s kidney disease will damage their kidney function gradually, and when patient’s kidney function is damaged to a certain degree, that will cause patient to have high levels of creatinine and BUN.

Kidney has strong metabolic ability, and it is not easy for patients to have high levels of creatinine and BUN unless more than half normal kidney function is damaged by kidney disease. As a result, that is why high levels of creatinine and BUN are dangerous signs for patients with kidney disease.

What is the normal creatinine level?

Creatinine is a metabolic product of muscle, and it should be filtrated by kidney. Little creatinine can be reabsorbed back to blood by kidney tubule, so its level in blood can refect patient’s kidney function.

For healthy people, their muscles can produce creatinine continuously, and it will also be filtrated out by kidney persistently, so creatinine level in our body changes in a stable range, and it is 0.6~1.2md/dL.

Patients will begin to have high creatinine when they are in CKD stage 3, in which stage the damaged kidney function reaches half. Besides, CKD patients’ creatinine level will not rise obviously until damaged kidney function reaches about two thirds.

What is the normal BUN range?

BUN refers to blood urea nitrogen, which is a major metabolic product of protein. BUN level changes in a stable range, and that is 9~20mg/dL. If patient’s BUN level is higher than this value, patients will be thought to have high BUN.

Just like creatinine, it is not easy for patients to have high BUN unless more than half normal kidney function is damaged, and if patient’s BUN is too high, patients will need to take dialysis.
