    Kidney Transplant for Kidney Disease

Kidney TransplantWhat is a kidney transplant?

A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure to place a functioning kidney from a donor into a person whose kidneys no longer function properly. However, receiving a kidney transplant is not an easy thing, and also some patients are not suitable to do such a surgery because of various of reasons.

Who cannot use a kidney transplant?

    -Those with a widespread cancer

    -Those with an active infection

-Those with liver or heart disease

    -Those with AIDS.

What are the risks of receiving a kidney transplant?

Complications of the procedure: blood clots, bleeding, leaking from or blocking of the tube, infection, failure of the donated kidney, rejection of the donated kidney.

Anti-rejection medication side effects: acne, bone thinning, diabetes, excessive hair growth, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, infection, edema, weight gain, increased risk of cancer, particular skin cancer and non-Hodgkin.

What will be the results after receiving a kidney transplant?

After a successful kidney transplant, your new kidney will filter your blood, so you will no longer need dialysis, and previous those dietary advices will not be that strict. To prevent your body rejecting your donor kidney, you will require medications to suppress your immune system. You will likely take these or similar drugs for the rest of your life.

What should you do after receiving a kidney transplant?

    -Taking medications as directed

    - Quit smoking

    - Avoidance of alcohol and drugs

    -Healthy balanced diet

    -Weight loss and exercise

    -Avoidance of the infection

-Sexual intercourse should be avoided till the abdominal incision wound is completely healed. This may take 4 to 6 weeks. Women should avoid getting pregnant at least for a year after the surgery.

What is the life expectancy for patients who receive a kidney transplant?

About 98% of people who receive a living-donor kidney transplant live for at least one year after their transplant surgery. About 90% live for at least five years. About 94% of people who receive a deceased-donor kidney transplant live for at least one year after their transplant surgery. About 82% live for at least five years.

If your new kidney fails and you can not be treated with treatment which helps recover kidney function, you have to resume dialysis or consider a second kidney transplant.

    Kidney Transplant and creatinine level

Generally speaking, the creatinine level will decline obviously within 24 hours after receiving a kidney transplant. And it can go back to normal level of creatinine after 72 hours. There will be a fluctuation of creatinine level after one week in general, but the creatinine level will be in the normal range after one month.

If high creatinine level is found again, patients should go and check the real cause of high creatinine level. If the new kidney fails, a prompt treatment which helps repair kidney damage and recover kidney function can help avoid second kidney transplant.

Is kidney transplant the only choice for ESRD patients?

In China, kidney transplant will not be the last choice until nearly all of the kidney function has been lost or patients have had no urine output for a long period of time. As long as kidney disease patients still have some certain urine output, Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy and Immunotherapy which aim at saving kidneys can become alternative treatment options.
