    How Does A Scarred Kidney Cause HypertensionHypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is one leading cause of kidney damage. Meanwhile, it can be the common symptom when diagnosed with kidney damage. Well then, how does a scarred kidney cause hypertension?

    As we all know, the healthy kidney plays a key role in keeping a person’s blood pressure in a healthy range. However, when the kidneys are scarred by some factors, kidney function will be affected and patients will have a series of symptoms and discomforts among which hypertension is one common sign.

    The causes of hypertension in kidney disease.

    Water-sodium retention

    The healthy kidneys are responsible for discharging extra fluid and metabolism of minerals from the body. However, for the damaged kidneys, they fails to do the job well and water-sodium retention is easy to occur. Extra fluid in the body increases the amount if fluid in blood vessels and makes blood pressure higher. In the condition, blood pressure will raise.

    In addition, the damaged kidneys can can cause ischemia and hypoxia in the kidneys which will activate the RAAS (Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone System). Angiotensin II has direct stimulation to vasoconstriction and aldosterone can worsen water and sodium retention so as to further increase high blood pressure.

    Actually, high blood pressure, in turn, can affect the healthy of the kidneys. High blood pressure can damage the kidneys and lead to chronic kidney disease (CKD).

    Well then, how can I prevent high blood pressure from damaging kidney disease?

    1. If you have kidney damage, you should keep your blood pressure below 130/80.

    2. Two groups of medications called ACE (Angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibits and ARBs (angiotensin receptor blockers) lower blood pressure and have an added protective effect on the kidney in people with diabetes.

    3. Diuretics, or water pills can help your urinate and get rid of excess fluid in the body.
