Does High Creatinine Level or High BUN Always Mean Kidney Disease

Does High Creatinine Level or High BUN Always Mean Kidney DiseaseWhat does high creatinine level and high BUN mean? Nowadays, more and more people are prone to suffer from high creatinine level and/or high blood urea nitrogen. The followings are explanations about this problem.

Creatinine is a metabolic product of creatine phosphate from our muscles. In addition, it also comes from the food, especially the meat products we eat. Normally, kidneys can remove the creatinine in our blood and that accumulated in urine. In this way, creatinine level can be kept in a normal range. The normal value of creatinine is 0.5-1.3ml/min. High creatinine levels usually indicate damage of glomerular filtration function, namely kidney damage.

BUN (blood urea nitrogen) is the end product of protein in our body. Generally, the healthy kidneys are responsible to discharge the extra waste products from the body. A BUN level is an important indicator to reflect how well your kidneys are functioning. For an healthy adult individual, BUN level should be in the range 6 to 20mg/dl (3.2-7.1mmol/L).

However, since our kidneys have strong compensatory ability, a half of renal function can guarantee our body health. Due to severe kidney damage, high creatinine level is not easy to occur until more than half of renal function has been damaged.

Through above analysis, we can see that both high creatinine level and high BUN level are always associated with severe kidney damage. But the high elevated values of them do not always mean kidney damage. Because for people with strong muscles, their high creatinine level will be little higher than the normal range. And eating too much protein will also increase BUN levels.

Once you suffer from long-term high creatinine level or high BUN levels, you should go to hospital to do some regular tests such as blood test, urine test, kidney biopsy and so on.
