    Abdominal Pain with Peritoneal Dialysis

Abdominal Pain with Peritoneal DialysisDialysis is divided into hematodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, which are imoprtant measures for patients with CKD to control their condition and prolong their lifetime when they are in the late stage of CKD. Comparing with hematodialysis, peritoneal dialysis has its obvious benefits, which is more helpful for patients with CKD to protect their remaining kidney functin. However, patients who accept peritoneal dialysis often have abdominal pain, which is a suffering feeling. Well then, why patients with peritoneal dialysis often have abdominal pain?

    1. Peritonitis:

Infection is very common, which can cause patients to have peritonitis. Peritonitis is a severe problem, and patients may need surgery. At this point, it is normal for patients to have abdominal pain.

    2. Abdominal distension:

For patients who begin to accept peritoneal dialysis, it is normal for them to be maladaptive to this therapy at the begining, which can cause patients to have abdominal pain. Besides, intestine peristalsis may be weaken in dialysis, and that can also cause abdominal distension. While abdominal distension is also a factor that can cause patients to have abdominal pain.

    3. Hypertonic dialyzate:

If hypertomic dialyzate is infused into patient’s enterocoelia in a fast speed, that can also cause patients to have abdominal pain.

It is important for patients to regulate the temperature of their dialyzate, because both supercooled and overheated tempreture of dialyzate can cause patients to have abdominal pain.

    5. Using dialysis catheter improperly:

Dialysis catheter needs to be inserted into to patient’s enterocoelia, and if the dialysis catheter is inserted too deeply, it will also cause patients to have abdominal pain when patients begin dialysis.

Thereby, many factors can cause patients to have abdominal pain when they take peritoneal dialysis. However, peritoneal dialysis is still a good choice for CKD patients when their kidney function is damaged severely.
