What Causes Cramp in Patients with CKD

What Causes Cramp in Patients with CKDFor patients with kidney disease, they can have many health problems in their body, and muscle cramp is a very common symptom, and it often causes patients to have sleeping problems.

As we know, kidney is in charge of the metabolic balances of fluid, electrolytes and acid-base, so it is common for patients to wonder why they have muscle cramp, or what is the relation between cramp and CKD.

What are the causes of muscle cramp?

In fact, muscle cramp in patients with CKD is mainly caused by the metabolic disorder of electrolytes, and if patients are taking dialysis, the side effects of dialysis also often cause muscle cramp.

A major cause of muscle cramp is the deficiency of potassium in patient’s blood, because potassium is very important for our muscle system. Besides, another major cause of muscle cramp is hypocalcemia, which can be caused by various reasons, like the shortage of vitamin D due to diet restriction, the metabolic disorder of vitamin D and hyperphosphatemia.

How to deal with this problem?

For patients with CKD who have muscle cramp, to deal with their problem, it is necessary for patients to correct the imbalances of electrolytes in their body.

If muscle cramp is caused by the deficiency of potassium, it is necessary for patients to increase their potassium intake in their diet, and foods with abundant potassium, like banana, kiwi fruit, etc, will be very helpful for patients to increase the potassium level in their blood.

If muscle cramp is caused by hypocalcemia, patients will need to increase the intake of calcium in their diet, and it is also necessary for patients to increase their intake of vitamin D, which can promote intestinal absorption to calcium. It is also very important for patients to decrease their intake of phosphorus or take phosphate binder.

Thereby, muscle cramp is mainly caused by the metabolic disorder of electrolytes in patient’s body, and measures should be taken according to the causes. As we know, kidney disease is very dangerous, so patients should do what they can to improve their condition. If you have any trouble, you can leave us a message about your problem and details.
