    What to Eat When You Have CKD Stage 1~2

    When you are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease(CKD), it is the time to make dietary changes. What to eat when you have CKD stage 1~2?

    In stage 1~2 CKD, your kidneys still work well to filter wastes and fluid as well as balance the levels of different minerals in body. The diet mainly focuses on preserving renal function, reduce blood pressure, and control blood sugar level in Diabetes.

    Diet recommendations for risk factors related to the early stages of CKD

    High blood pressure

    A diet low in sodium and salt can help lower blood pressure.The patients are recommended to have 1,500 mg of sodium each day. Another way to lower high blood pressure in early stages of CKD is to increase potassium intake from fruits and vegetables. In stage 1~2 CKD, the kidneys can work well to filter potassium from body so no restricted potassium consumption is needed.

    High blood sugar

    High blood sugar is a major concern for diabetics and also uncontrolled blood sugar levels are the culprit of kidney problem. It is important to reduce the intake of carbohydrates each meal and learn about carbohydrate counting to help stay within set carbohydrate targets.


    Proteinuria refers to loss of extra proteins in urine. It is a risk factor for kidney disease progression. Limiting protein intake can reduce protein leakage and slow the disease progression. In stage 1~2 CKD, 0.8~1.2 grams per kilo of body weight is recommended.

    Additionally,the following dietary changes can help slow CKD progression and improve the overall health.

    *Limit alcohol and quit smoking

    *Limit high-fat dairy, including milk, yogurt,frozen desserts etc.

    *Have fewer processed foods, particularly ones with hidden phosphorus additives.

    *Eat more fruits and vegetables high in fiber.
