Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can be divied into five stages. CKD stage 5 is the last stage of CKD.As the kidneys are impaired significantly, an array of symptoms will appear. The following article will introduce CKD stage 5 symptoms.
Poor appetite
Poor appetite is a common complaint in patients with CKD stage 5.As the kidneys fail to work to filter wastes from body, high levels of waste products can build up in body, thus leading to poor appetite. In addition,if the digestive tract is flooded with extra fluid, it also can contribute to poor appetite.
Being tired
The patients with CKD stage 5 often feel very tired. It is mainly due to anemia.Healthy kidneys can produce a hormone called EPO which can stimulate the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. However, when the kidneys fail to work, they will not able to produce enough EPO. Less production of red blood cells can lead to anemia.
Headache
Headache is a common complaint in CKD stage 5.It is mainly caused by high blood pressure. In serious case, extra fluid may build up in brain, resulting in cerebral edema. Cerebral edema can make the patients feel headache and it even can be life-threatening.
Making little or no urine
Kidneys can filter blood and help the body get rid of extra fluid and wastes by producing urine. However,in CKD stage 5,the kidney tissues may become scarred so the patients fail to remove extra fluid from body.As a result, the patients may make little or no urine. The urine output decreases as the disease progresses.
Skin itching
Skin itching is an annoying condition for people with CKD stage 5. An major culprit of skin itching is high building up of phosphorus in body. If the patients are on dialysis, the may also experience skin itching if they are allergic to products or dialysis machine.
The above are some common symptoms of CKD stage 5.As CKD is a very complex disease,it can involve multiple organs and systems in body. The patients with CKD stage 5 usually have injury in multiple organs and systems like brain, lung, heart, etc.
