What Causes for Shortness of Breathing in CKD Stage 5A person with CKD Stage 5 has a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 15ml/min or less. At this advanced stage of kidney disease, patients are prone to suffer from numerous symptoms and complications. Shortness of breath is one of common discomfort for patients. Well then, what causes for the condition?

Stage 5 CKD is also known Kidney Failure, which means kidneys have been damaged severely. As we all know, our kidneys are endowed with numerous functions which can help maintain the whole body health. However, for kidney failure patients, impaired kidneys are unable to do normal jobs. And following conditions can contribute to lead to shortness of breath.

    1. Pleural effusion

The kidneys’ inability to get rid of excessive fluids may lead to fluid accumulation in the lungs in the cavity of the chest, thereby causing shortness of breath.

    2. Anemia

Health kidneys can produce a hormone, EPO, which stimulate the bone marrow to make red blood cells needed to carry oxygen all over the body. However, in Stage 5 Kidney Failure, there is shortage of red blood cells which carry oxygen, the body will be left starved, resulting in breathing problem.

    3. Some medications

In order to control or relieve some symptoms, patients often take some medicines. It may be one of the side effects of certain medicine which does not agree with the physiology of the body.

    4. High Blood Pressure

Long-standing narrowed arteries and elevated blood pressure reduce the blood pumping capacity of the heart. Since different body parts get deprived of sufficient amount of blood, and hence, oxygen, people may develop dyspnea.

    5. Bad emotions

Certain emotional conditions such as anxiety and panic attacks can also result in acute breathing problems.
