Chronic kidney disease (CKD) refers to progressive loss of renal function. Life style changes plays a very important role in preserving the remaining renal function. Stage 3 CKD is featured with moderate kidney damage. To reduce extra strain on kidneys, a healthy diet for stage 3 CKD may recommend:
*If the patients have protein in urine, the should restrict their daily protein consumption. Protein restriction can reduce the production of urea, which can cause stress on kidneys.
*A variety of grains, fruits and vegetables should be included in the diet. However, whole grains and some fruits and vegetables may be limited and even avoided if the levels of phosphorus and potassium in blood are higher than normal.
*The patients with kidney disease are at risk of heart disease and cardiovascular diseases.A diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol and moderate in total fats is recommended in stage 3 CKD.
*Processed foods should be limited in stage 3 CKD due to high content of sodium in them.High-sodium foods can increase the retention of fluid, which can cause high blood pressure or elevate blood pressure further. High blood pressure not only can do more damage to kidneys, but also can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
*Limiting phosphorus if blood levels of phosphorus or PTH are above normal.High levels of phosphorus can result in a number of problems like skin itching, bone disease, muscle weakness etc.
*The patients with stage 3 CKD should increase calorie intake if the protein intake is controlled.Adequate calorie intake can help the patients keep a healthy body weight.
*Potassium is usually not restricted unless blood levels are above normal. High levels of potassium in blood can cause irregular heartbeat and even heart attack.
The above are just some general tips for diet in stage 3 CKD.As the patients’ illness condition varies from individual to individual, a dietitian can help them make out a tailored dietary regime based on their blood work results.
