A Healthy Diet for Patients with Stage 3 CKD

    2014-06-15 00:25| Font Size A A A

A Healthy Diet for Patients with Stage 3 CKDA healthy diet is crucial for Stage 3 CKD patients, but there is no ideal meal plan fitting every patient. Because making a suitable diet should depend on many factors such as kidney function, lab values, body size, nutritional status and health history, you can consult a dietitian for an individual diet plan if you have stage 3 chronic kidney disease.

Here are some dietary knowledge from our experts, hoping it can give you some help.

    Calories

Appropriate amount of calories helps you keep a desirable weight. Your dietitian can give a right amount of calories and monitor your condition.

    Fats and cholesterol

Take in fats at a moderate amount and replace unhealthy fats, such as saturated fats and trans-fats by poly- and monounsaturated fats. High cholesterol foods should be limited.

    Fluid

If you don’t have the symptom of fluid retention, such as sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, swelling and high blood pressure, there is not restriction for fluid.

    Phosphorus

The damaged kidney can’t excrete so much phosphorus, and the deposited phosphorus impacts bone and heart health. Foods high in phosphorus, such as cheese, chocolate, ice cream, legumes, milk, nuts are strictly limited. A diet with no more than 800 mg phosphorus is appropriate. If your PTH is too high, doctor will prescribe some vitamin D pill to help you lower it.

    Potassium

Unless your potassium is higher than expected, potassium is not restricted for Stage 3 CKD patients. But because of management medications, such as potassium-sparing diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) prescribed to reduce protein in the urine and high blood pressure, some patients’ potassium stays at a high level. Your doctor will make a medication change or prescribe a low- potassium diet. For these cases, some high-potassium foods like bananas, avocado, cantaloupe and honeydew should be limited.

    Protein

The recommendation, from our experts, for protein intake in stage 3 is 0.8 g/kg every day. Patients should eat more high-quality protein food. This kind of protein has the essential amino acids and produce less metabolic wastes. Egg whites, fish, milk (small amounts) and lean meat are recommended foods for Stage 3 CKD patients.

    Sodium

The sodium recommendation for stage 3 CKD is 1,000-4,000 mg/day . A good control of sodium level is good for controlling blood pressure and treating fluid retention.

A healthy diet helps preserve kidney function and overall health, so it’s important for stage 3 chronic kidney disease patients to adhere to doctors’ or dietitians’ dietary advices. If you have any further question, welcome to contact our experts online.
