A Special Diet for People with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Diet for People with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)When you have chronic kidney disease (CKD),your kidneys are not functioning as well as they should do.Changing your diet can reduce strain on your kidneys and help protect your kidneys, thus slowing the progression of the disease.

How can a special diet can help in managing CKD?

A special diet can help control the buildup of waste products and fluid in body and decrease the workload on kidneys. After all, it can slow down the disease progression and renal function decline. As the condition varies from individual to individual, you should consult a dietitian to get make out a tailored dietary regime.

    What is renal diet like?

A general diet for CKD patients should control the amount of protein, phosphorus, potassium and sodium.Meanwhile, the patients should get enough calories to maintain a healthy weight and also more foods high in fiber are recommended to the patients.

    Protein

After your body uses the protein, a waste called urea is made.If your kidneys are impaired, the kidneys will become less able to remove the urea from body, which can burden kidneys. You should limit foods loaded in proteins mainly animal products like poultry, meat, seafood, eggs, milk, cheese and other dairy products.

    Phosphorus

When your kidneys are not able to remove phosphorus from blood, high levels of phosphorus can build up in body. A high blood phosphorus level can cause bone to lose calcium, thus weakening your bones. The following foods are especially high in phosphorus:

*dairy products such as milk, cheese, pudding, yogurt and ice cream

*dried beans and peas such as kidney beans, split peas and lentils

    *nuts and peanut butter

*beverages such as cocoa, beer and cola soft drinks

    Sodium

Excess consumption of sodium can cause retention of fluid, which can elevate blood pressure.High blood pressure is a significant accelerator in worsening renal function.

The above is only a general diet for CKD patients. Your diet should change as your kidney function changes. So it is necessary for you to consult with a dietitian regularly.
