How Much Protein Can A CKD Patient Eat

How Much Protein Can A CKD Patient EatDiet is very important for a Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patient. We all know kidney patients should follow a moderate diet and eat limited protein. Well then, how much protein can a CKD patient eat per day on earth?

In fact, kidney patients should follow a low but high quality protein diet. They should limit protein intake and increase more high quality protein diet.

Limitation of protein intake is an important step in treating chronic kidney disease. Low protein intake can reduce the excretion of urine protein, reduce the burden of the kidney protein metabolism, slow down the decline of kidney function and delay the dialysis.

However, low protein diet does not mean you can not take protein while protein intake should be moderate, can not lead to malnutrition and cause burden on kidneys. The exact amount of protein intake should be based on age, gender, body weight, height, kidney function, physiological and pathological condition.

For example: how much protein can a CKD patient consume without dialysis?

If your body weight is 60kg, you should consume 48g protein every day. 48g protein can include one egg (7g), 250ml milk (9g), one piece of meat (8g), vegetables (4g) and staple food (20g). If you need to control your protein intake further, you can limit staple food. However, in order to control calories intake, you can consume some wheat starch.

In order to help CKD patients choose their meals, we make a low protein intake for them. Assuming that patients need to consume 40g protein per day, they can drink one bag of milk, one egg, one gram of meat, one catty of gourd vegetables and 2-3 gram of staple food.
