Can Dialysis Patients Eat Vitamin E

Can Dialysis Patients Eat Vitamin E Patients on kidney dialysis have different vitamin and diet needs than the general population. Dialysis “washes out” some vitamins in some cases. Well then, can dialysis patients eat vitamin E? Now, let’s see.

A report proves that vitamin E intake has benefits for dialysis patients.

It has been demonstrated in many studies that oxidative stress has been increased in the development of the dialysis-related diseases, especially in cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is the common complication and the main cause of death in the dialysis patients. However, when the antioxidants are replenished in these dialysis patients, the oxidative stress would be improved and the morebidity of CVD would decline. As an important antioxidant, vitamin E has been widely dispersed over the surface of biomembranes in various tissues and organs. Whenever the oxidants attack the biomenbranes, vitamin E is first consumed in order to protect tissues and organs, then series of ractions on the biomembranes are well proceeding. What’s more, the foreign reports have been demonstrated that the mortality and morbidity of CVD were decreased when high dose vitamin E were provided to the dialysis patients. They also reported that vitamin E coated cellulose membrane dialysers can reduce the LDL oxidants and the progress of aortic calcification.

However, it’s my duty to tell you some considerations:

    1. The dosage of vitamin E should be individualized according to your illness condition.

    2. Do not take vitamin E unless getting the doctor’s permission.

    3. Regulate the dosage of vitamin E if you take some medications like Aspirin.

    4. Avoid taking vitamin E if you take vitamin K at the same time.

Through the above analysis, we can see that dialysis patients should be careful while taking vitamin E. Any questions, please do feel free to contact our Online Doctor or email to or leave a message below directly.
