How Should Patients with CKD Regulate Their Fluid Intake

How Should Patients with CKD Regulate Their Fluid IntakeWater is the most important nutrient for our body health, and for patients wih CKD, to improve their condition and protect their remaining kidney function, they should regulate their water intake according to their own condition. Well then, how should patients with CKD regulate their fluid intake?

What is the connection between water and kidney?

Water is very important for our body health, becasue it is the most important nutrient, which is essential in our body’s metabolism .

The metabolic wastes produced by our body tissues will be transported into our blood, and kidney is our body’s filter, which will filtrate out the metabolic wastes in blood. As a result, the metabolic wastes and toxins will be removed out from our body through urine.

How should CKD patients regulate their fluid intake?

For patients with CKD, their kidney function will be damaged gradually by their kidney disease, and when patient’s kidney damage is very severe, that will cause the metabolic wastes accumulating in patient’s body. In fact, for most CKD patients, they are recommened to increase their fluid intake, which can produce more urine and remove out more metabolic wastes.

However, increasing fluid intake is not good for all CKD patients, and in some conditions, patients will need to restrict their fluid intake. For example, if patients with CKD have obvious edema and hypertension, they will need to avoid excess fluid intake. If patients have less urine output, they will also need to restrict their fluid intake. If patients have obvious edema or hypertension, patient’s fluid intake should guarantee his daily need, and it is about 800~1500ml/day. While if patients begin to have less urine, patients will need to restrict his fluid intake, and their fluid intake is their yesterday’s urine output plus 500ml.

As we know, kidney disease is very dangerous, and patients should do their best to improve their condition. If you have any trouble in dealing with your condition, you can leave us a message about your details and problem, we will provide the guidance you need or do what we can to help you.
