    CKD Stage1~2

    Should CKD Patients Reduce Their Water Intake If They Have EdemaFor patients with chronic kidney disease, edema is a common complication in their body, which is caused by the accumulation of much fluid in patient’s body. Edema often appears in patient’s lower limbs and eyelids, and if patient’s edema is very severe, it can also appear in patient’s lungs and stomach. Well then, if patients have edema, should they reduce their water intake?

    Should patients reduce their fluid intake if they have edema?

    Edema is a common complication of CKD, and two major factors can lead to edema. One is proteinuria, and the other is patient’s low kidney function. In fact, massive proteinuruia can cause patients to have severe edema, and when patients are in the late stage of CKD, they can also have obvious edema.

    If patients have obvious edema, that means much fluid has accumulated in patient’s body, and patients should restrict his fluid intake at this point. While if patient’s edema is not severe, there is no need to reduce patient’s fluid intake.

    How should CKD patients regulate their fluid intake?

    As we know, water is the most important nutrient for our body heath, and it is imprtant for patients to regulate his fluid intake.

    When patients have obvious edema or patients are on dialysis, it will be necessary for them to reduce their fluid intake. In fact, the water intake of patients with obvious edema and Dialysis will be about 500ml plus yesterday’s urine amount. While if patient’s condition is not very severe, there is no need for him to restrict his fluid intake. It is better for patient to increase his water intake appropriately, becasue more water is very helpful to remove out the metabolic wastes from patient’s body.

    Thereby, whether patients should increase their water intake depends on their own conditions, and it is better for patients to ask for advices from a dietian or his doctor.
