    How Should Patients with Dialysis Regulate Their Fluid IntakeKidney is in charge of the metabolic balances of fluid, electrolytes and acid-base in our body, while when it is damaged severely, the metabolic wastes and excess fluid will accumulate in patient’s body. The metabolic disorders of fluid, acid-base, and electyrolytes will appear at this point.

    For patients with kidney disease, when their kidney function is damaged severely by their disease, dialysis will be an important method to control patient’s condition and prolong patient’s lifetime, which can help patients remove out the metabolic wastes and excess fluid form patient’s body. Well then, for patients with dialysis, how should they regulate their fluid intake?

    Should patients on dialysis restrict their fluid intake?

    Dialysis is a kidney replacement therapy, and it will be needed when patient’s kidney function is damaged severely. As we can imagine, when little remianing kidney function is left, the metabolic wastes and excess fluid will accumulate in patient’s body, which will break the metabolic balances in patient’s body.

    If dialysis is needed due to patient’s low kidney function, patients will need to restrict his fluid intake, because much fluid intake will increase patient’s burden. While if dialysis is needed to control the complication caused by the metabolic disorders, patients may have a certain percentage of remaing kidney function, and patients may not need to have fluid restriction at this point.

    How should dialysis patients restrict their fluid intake?

    If dialysis is needed due to patient’s low kidney function, patients will need to restrict his fluid intake. Patients often have less urine at this point, and usually patient’s water intake should be his yesterday’s urine amount plus 500ml. While dialysis is needed to control patient’s complications caused by the metabolic disorders of electrolytes or acid-base, and patient’s disease has not progressed into the end stage,he will not need to have water restriction.
