What Are the Risks If I Get Pregnant with Horseshoe Kidneys

What Are the Risks If I Get Pregnant with Horseshoe KidneysWhat are the risks if I get pregnant with horseshoe kidneys? I am sure that it is a common question for women with horseshoe kidneys. Because to be a mother is a dream for a woman. But for them, whether they can successfully get pregnant is indeed a worrying question.

Horseshoe kidneys, also know as renal fusion or super kidneys, is a congenital disorder. When the kidneys of fetus rise from the pelvic area and fuse together at the lower end, forming “U” shape. Generally speaking, patients can have successful pregnancy and there is nothing to worry if their renal functions are normal and no symptoms to occur. To be frank, horseshoe kidneys themselves do not have any effect on pregnancy at all. But what I want to remind you that if you have many complications with the disease, you should reconsider whether you want to be pregnant. Because there is certain risks if they are pregnant. If they have the following complications:

Urinary tract infection is a common symptom of horseshoe kidneys. Abnormalities in the drainage system is commonly seen in horseshoe kidney. If this condition occurs, there is a tendency for urine to flow backwards from the bladder to the kidney. If so, the patients are at high risk of developing urinary tract infection. Hydronephrosis is also a serious complication of horseshoe kidneys. If hydronephrosis occurs, it may affect renal function and pregnancy may aggravate the condition. In addition, high blood pressure in horseshoe kidney is a risk for both mother and baby.

If the mentioned above occurs, they will cause a myriad of pregnancy complications like premature delivery, eclampsia, stillbirth, etc. What’s more, your kidneys have to work harder to filter wastes produced by both mother and baby, which will certainly cause further damage to kidneys.

Although there are certain risks, most women with horseshoe kidney can have a successful pregnancy. Generally speaking, before pregnancy, they are recommended to assess their overall illness condition and see if they can have a healthy baby.
