Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Stages Chart

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Stages ChartChronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is characterized by the progressive loss in renal function over a period of months or years. To help improve the quality of care for people with kidney disease, the National Foundation created a guideline to help doctors identify each level of kidney disease.

Actually, Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is the best measure of kidney function. And usually, the GFR is the number used to figure out a person’s stage of kidney disease. What’s more, according to GFR, chronic kidney disease is divided into five stages and each stage has different GFR levels and signs. The following content can as your reference.

    Stage 1 Chronic Kidney Disease

Stage 1 CKD is characterized with normal or high kidney function and the GFR level is at 90 or above. In the stage, the kidneys can work normally and there is no any signs or discomforts to indicate kidney damage.

    Stage 2 Chronic Kidney Disease

Stage 2 CKD has kidney damage with a mild decrease in their glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 60-89ml/min. Usually there are no symptoms to show that kidneys are damaged. But some test can be used such as blood test, urine test for indicating the early signs of kidney disease.

    Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease

Stage 3 CKD is featured with moderate decline in GFR of 30-59ml/min. What’s more, the stage is further broken up into two parts: Stage 3A (GFR is 45-59ml/min) and Stage 3B (GFR is 30-44ml/min). Most patients do not suffer from obvious symptoms until the condition progresses into stage 3 kidney disease.

    Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease

Stage 4 CKD has advanced kidney damage with severe decrease in the GFR to 15-30ml/min. It is likely someone with stage 4 CKD will need dialysis or a kidney transplant in the near further.

    Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease

A person with stage 5 kidney disease has end stage renal disease (ESRD) with a GFR of 15ml/min or even less. At the advanced stage of kidney disease, the kidneys have lost nearly all their ability to do their job effectively. Dialysis or kidney transplant is needed to live.
