What Is the Critical BUN Level

    2014-11-17 03:44| Font Size A A A

What Is the Critical BUN LevelJust likes serum creatinine, BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) is also a test to evaluate kidney function. To know which BUN level you have can help you and your doctor to take right treatment.

What is the critical BUN level?

    Males

    1-17 years: 7-20 mg/dL

    > or =18 years: 8-24 mg/dL

Reference values have not been established for patients who are <12 months of age.

    Females

    1-17 years: 7-20 mg/dL

    > or =18 years: 6-21 mg/dL

Reference values have not been established for patients who are <12 months of age.

The critical level is wide so the Blood Urea Nitrogen level may vary from individuals to individuals. You can send you test report to ckdstage@hotmail.com, and our doctors online will give you suggestions for free.

What are the causes of BUN elevation?

Urea nitrogen is the product of protein metabolism. It is discharged by the kidneys as a kind of waste.

Increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) may be due to prerenal causes (cardiac decompensation, water depletion due to decreased intake and excessive loss, increased protein catabolism, and high protein diet), renal causes (acute glomerulonephritis, chronic nephritis, polycystic kidney disease, nephrosclerosis, and tubular necrosis) and postrenal causes (eg, all types of obstruction of the urinary tract, such as stones, enlarged prostate gland, tumors).

    Interpretation

Serum blood urea nitrogen determinations are considerably less sensitive than BUN-Creatinine Ratio: serum bun in mg/dL/serum creatinine in mg/dL. For a normal individual on a normal diet, the reference interval for the ratio ranges between 12 and 20, with most individuals being between 12 and 16.

How to lower high BUN level?

In our hospital, Beijing Tongshantang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, we treat kidney disease by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). These natural Chinese herbs can help repair damaged renal tissues so that all abnormal levels can be controlled and symptoms can be completely relieved.
